The first thing I would say about Two Days of Rolling Thunder is that it is a great looking book. Glossy cover, good quality printing, and excellent images and illustrations throughout. It's not a very long book, but it has been designed to exploit double page images where ever possible, and has some very interesting illustrations that were commissioned specifically to help illustrate the story.
The quality of the writing it excellent, IMO. Col Deas has written his story in what it is I think a very unusual style: he talks to you as an equal. So, he's not so much telling you a story as talking you through the experience itself. This does two things. One, it makes a complete change from the way that these books are normally written. Two, it lets you imagine that you're there, at Takhli, about to fly a combat mission over North Vietnam.
And what a mission it is! Two Days of Rolling Thunder is concerned with the first two days of strikes against a steel mill in North Vietnam, although the bulk of the action in the book concerns the first day. You are talked through the mission planning process, and there are some excellent passages of narrative where the reality of the experience - and mortality of the pilots - is beautifully highlighted through clever writing. As the book progresses, you get closer and closer to the actual mission, the description of which Deas has used his actual cockpit voice tapes to reconstruct. From the interaction with his crew chief to the calls made in the thick of combat, you're reading them verbatim and as they actually happened. With the mission over, Deas concludes with some more profoundly moving prose about what being a fighter pilot really means.
I really enjoyed this book. It's probably more accurate to call it a short story, but that's actually a testament to the writing prowess of the author. Many others, I suspect, could have made a right meal out of telling this story. But Deas is crisp, concise without being brief, and able to take you on an emotional roller coaster of a journey in a way that I've never experienced before. Having read Ed Rasimus' review of Two Days of Rolling Thunder, I can now see why his deference to Deas is so deserved.
A definite keeper.
